Just when the Hollywood intelligentsia start gearing up for the movie premiere of Hairspray (the Broadway musical version), Baltimore City's crime problem blazes out of control. The last time the city took this much heat was The Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. Well, maybe not that far back, but close. I wonder if Brittany Snow plans to attend the premiere without her bodyguards.
The streets of Pigtown are out of control. Mayoral candidates now bandy about the idea of marshall law. Marshall Freaking Law for cripes sake! Are these people brain dead?
I'm a born and buttered Baltimoron, and the first to crack wise about her hometown roots. Hons, dem O's, seafood, Preakness, the Inner Harbor, Nipper the dog, the Bromo Seltzer Tower...I have a symbiotic relationship with all things Charm City. Baltimore is who I am and what I love about America. It's a big city comprised of many neighborhoods and community groups, a small town that simply got too big for its britches. There's a feeling of belonging in Baltimore I can't put into words. I haven't really found that anywhere else and believe me I've tried.
But Baltimore sure has its problems -- rampant deadly crime for one. It's gotten pretty darn bleak out there. I'm genuinely afraid to walk around my neighborhood at night. And I live in Baltimore County.
Complaining isn't going to change things, but maybe it will help open a dialogue. This town needs some practical solutions, not drivel from vote mongering political candidates. Perhaps if residents cared more about civic pride than partying on city streets and killing one another, this little town could turn itself around. Like that little engine chugging and puffing, "I think we can...I think we can..."

Ratings Spike for Larry King Live
I have nothing against Larry King Live. On second thought, the image of Larry liplocked with the late great Marlon Brando vaguely reminds me of naked Borat and the fat man. Ech. Yech. Ptoo.
Number one cable ratings. Not too shabby, Paris. Perhaps Barbara Walters was wrong to pass on your jailhouse release ramble. On second thought...
Kudos to Bill McCuddy, Fox News entertainment reporter, for giving me my LMAOMoment of the day. He succinctly dubbed the interview "Punxatawney Paris." The news gophers flash their cameras and everyone goes home. Kinda like this who cares event .
Then again, I would have hung around to dance the Pennsylvania Polka .

You Know Who Released from Jail
Do I have to name names? By now everyone in the Northern Hemisphere and select parts of Europe know that Paris is no longer under siege. Hoo-ah!
I'm ashamed to admit my own participation in this guilty little pleasure. She's blonde. She's hot. She's eye-candy. Seemingly clueless. She's fluff. There's internet pictures of her with no underwear (I swear, I only looked for a second, then became completely flabbergasted and moved on, honestly, I did).
Why are we all so fascinated?
I can't help feeling slightly sorry for this woman. Contrary to popular belief, "richyoungandbeautiful" is not the end all be all. Paparazzi and intrusive fans pester her wherever she goes. I'll bet she can't even walk into a grocery store without people gaping and snapping their cell phones (then again, she can send Jeeves out to buy a quart of milk, no?). And what about Sarah Silverman's diatribe at the 2007 MTV Awards?I don't know when it became fashionable to skewer down and out celebutauntes perched in your own audience, but the sheer humiliation must have been unbearable. I surely would have burst into tears and run for cover. Snarky Jack Nicholson and Eva Mendes couldn't have made life any easier.
The simple life? No thank you. The grass is just fine over here.

Rush Limbaugh is Running America
What's all the hype about Rush Limbaugh becoming the de facto leader of the Free World? Was I in a coma during the last election?
Count me as one who hardly agrees with Limbaugh's unique political philosophy, but finds his conservative talk show persona thoroughly entertaining and informative. I whole heartedly agree with his program hyperbole, especially Open Line Friday being the fastest three hours in radio.
But who in their right mind can take Rush Limbaugh without a grain of salt? He's right wing conservative all the way. The moderate perspective? Can't be bothered. The liberal point of view? Fuhgeddaboutit. The EIB network is not a balanced reporting vehicle nor does it claim to be.
With Rush, what you see is what you get, take it or leave it. More than anything else, this singularity of purpose, a relentless focus on fundamental conservative values is in large part responsible for his enormous popularity and substantial sphere of influence. Limbaugh is the phenomenon right wing conservatives want to emulate. Who else can speak as eloquently for this sector of the electorate?
Apparently, Limbaugh detractors just don't get it. They'd rather stifle Rush and everything he holds near and dear. As the 2008 election heats up, rumors have been floated about Limbaugh's undue influence over legions of dittoheads. These poor people just can't think for themsleves and other such nonsense. Government muckety-mucks are all a-titter.
I'm happy to report Capitol Hill outrage has reached a crescendo . Who exactly does Rush Limbaugh think he is...the United States President?!
Witness liberal media envy at its finest. Jealousy over their lack of ability to motivate joe citizen, looking to eradicate the last refuge of counter opinion, they now turn the big guns on Rush Limbaugh and other conservative talk show hosts. It isn't enough to control practically all other forms of multi-media, no, they must also silence conservative America on the air waves to liberate the will of the American people (suuuuurrrre).
Enough. Be gone drive-by media. I need another perspective!
Sadly, once again, talk show radio hosts are under fire for their uncanny ability to grind the political wheel from the ground up, *shudder* apparently an overwhelmingly scary thought for party line towers and media drive-bys. Limbaugh and others recently motivated record numbers of listeners to bombard elected representatives with vehement opposition to the illegal immigrantion initiative. Their actions successfully kicked the pants off the fledgling legislation , sending it all the way back to committee. Did it ever occur to these congressional vote hounds and senior elected officials that maybe -- just maybe -- the bulk of U.S. citizens are outraged by the prospect of a pinky bandaid for a hemorrhaging illegal immigration problem?
Pipe down you ridiculous pols . Your political boogeyman is nothing more than a figment of your overactive imaginations. Rush Limbaugh doesn't aspire to be your President. It would mean taking a whopper of a salary cut...something anathema to Rush's basic capitalistic philosophy.

Snapshots from Weekend
We went back this weekend to New England to check-up on our elderly parents. We were relaxing Saturday afternoon on my mother's patio, and I had a chance to walk around her property to capture a few photos with the 50mm f/1.4 lens.
Note about last image: As my mother was just given an award for her efforts to promote the arts in her community, we decided a photo of the "artist in her studio" was appropriate. I switched to the 31mm lens for this photo.

Magic Lantern K10D Guide
Magic Lantern's K10D Guide, which is written by Peter Burian, is now shipping. Peter has authored many books on photography and frequently writes product reviews for publications like Shutterbug. Here's an index of some of his articles: "Peter Burian Reviews at Shutterbug"
The book should be in stock very shortly at Barnes & Noble bookstores, photo retailers that carry Magic Lantern, as well as Amazon. Here's a link to Amazon which is accepting "pre-orders", but I'm sure they'll change status to "in-stock" in the next few days. "K10D Guide at Amazon"

San Clemente Car Show
Today was the 12th Annual San Clemente (CA) Car Show. As I typically do when shooting for fun, I went with my "One Day/One Lens" philosophy and used the 70mm "pancake" to photograph all the cars. I couldn't have gone with a wider angle lens to capture the entire car, as the event was crowded, and I didn't want to include heads and bodies of strangers in my photos. The 70mm FOV also gave me a bit of a challenge in that I had to focus only on car details or patterns that looked interesting. All photos shot in RAW with the K10D; processed with PhotoLab 3.1 into TIFF's; and converted them into small (< 1MB) JPEGs for web viewing.
