What Happens When Community Colleges Take Away The Helping Hand?

This is one of my favorite statues:

Booker T. Washington lifting the veil of ignorance. For the Black community,
from the moment laws were enacted to prevent us from READING…

EDUCATION has been the key to lifting the Black Community.

It isn't a 'cure all', but it's been one of the most dependable paths to self-improvement that the Black community has known.

I have been in the process of possibly transitioning from one career to another. But, in
order to get into the program that I’m interested in, I have to prerequisites
for those programs. The cheapest way to get those credits where I live is
community college. Going to the local community college has been a positive
experience. You meet all types of people at the community college: races,
ethnicities, age groups, differing goals.

Which is why, when I read this article, I was definitely upset:

Community Colleges Rethink 'Open Door' Admissions as Remedial Costs Rise
By Caralee Adams on August 13, 2010 6:03 AM

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley this week called for an end to the "open
door" admissions policy at Chicago City Colleges, citing concerns about
the cost of remedial courses and a desire to build a quality program.
Every year, the system spends about $30 million for remedial
classes—about 6 percent of its $457.5 million budget. Daley suggested
that a better approach might be to offer programs through alternative
high schools to get students up to speed before they enter college.
Is this a sign of things to come?

Unfortunately, Chicago's approach is not unique, says George Boggs,
president and chief executive officer of the American Association of
Community Colleges. In tight economic times, community colleges are
looking for places to cut back, and some are stopping their most basic
remedial education programs.

"I'm a little concerned about this," Boggs says. "Community college has
always been an open door for college. We have taken everybody."
Students are assessed upon entry and take remedial programs if they
aren't prepared. Boggs doesn't want to see colleges weed out students
who are least able and don't have many other options.

Consider me in the concerned group. The point of Community College to me is that
it is THE place where someone wanting to improve their lot in life – through
education – could go. There is a sizeable group of Community College students
who need these remedial classes in order to be able to GET to the beginning of
where they want to go. These are the students who suffered through inadequate
public schooling that hasn’t been in the business of educating urban Black youth
for about 30 years. So, you send them to crappy public elementary and high
schools, and they are shuffled through, out in the world, unprepared for any
jobs except for the lowest of rungs on the job ladder. Then, these folks decide
to challenge that, and see there is a professional goal that they have, but they
have to be fit to take the classes. These folks are not in remedial classes
because they have nothing else to do- they are in those classes because that is
the FIRST rung to get them on the way of their professional goals.

WHY would you want to cut off that rung for them? City colleges are the cheapest
way for those students to get this educational uplift that they need in order to
be able to compete in this society. It’s not just the classes themselves; for
many students who need these classes, college isn’t something that they grew up
in a household knowing that would just ‘ happen’ for them. It’s something
nebulous that happens to ‘ other’ people. For many, Community College is the
first time that they are in an educational environment where they are surrounded
by people who view education in a positive light. Coming from dangerous urban
high schools, the Community College is quite possibly the first SAFE educational
environment that they’ve experienced. Even though they would be in remedial
classes, it’s still in a college environment, and they would be near other
students. They would see in front of them where they want to go for themselves;
I don’t think positive reinforcement can be underestimated.

This story bothers me, because, if the ‘MISSION’ of the Community College is to
be open for all where the only requirement is the DESIRE for education and the
willingness to work for it, then what is the mission?
This galls me, because Richard Daley and his cronies have done nothing to
improve education for the average Black Public School Student, and the Community
Colleges WERE the place where those students could begin an educational journey.
So now, he’s condemning these students will not get a hand up anywhere. But, as
this article points out, this isn’t just a Chicago problem, this is happening
all over the country, and it is students in Urban areas – BLACK students – who
are getting the shaft.

If you are interested in voicing concern about this possible disastrous change in policy, please drop a letter to the new Chancellor:

Cheryl Hyman
Chancellor
District Office
City Colleges of Chicago
226 W. Jackson
Chicago, Illinois 60606
312.553.2500

You also can fill out the ' Ask the Chancellor' at the website.

It was a kick in the teeth to read the new Chancellor’s 'life story’, and realize that she graduated from
a school that where more than likely, the CURRENT students graduating from her alma mater won’t be able to attend Community Colleges without that remedial help?

Federer and Clijsters headline US Open start

Federer, whose five-set loss in the final to Juan Martin del Potro last year ended a 35-match winning streak dating to 2005, goes up against another Argentinian in the shape of little-known Brian Dabul in the late match on the Arthur Ashe Stadium Court.

Clijsters, whose triumph last year just weeks after she stepped out of retirement was one of the sports stories of the year, takes on Greta Arn of Hungary in the second match in the dayside session on the same court.

Also due to be in action were French Open finalist Robin Soderling of Sweden, who plays Austrian qualifier Andreas Haider-Maurer, and 2003 champion Andy Roddick of the United States, who faces Stephane Robert of France.

Venus Williams, who carries home hopes of a win following the withdrawal through injury of sister Serena, starts against Roberta Vinci of Italy.

Free Flow at Jaycee Park

Aussies

We never get contests in Greenville, who would have thought? Being Pro Town and all...

Luckily Gatorade has a stop in Greenville for their series, "Free Flow Tour".

With around 25 Beginner's and 9 Am's it was a great turn out and the future for BMX in Greenville looks great.

Freddy Smith came up from Orlando for beginners class and finish 2nd, and Mike Groff came all the way from the New Jersey area to take 3rd in Am.

The level of riding was anywhere from kids just riding on the flat ground to Australian Andrew Ahumada putting his name on the BMX scene with a 360 downside triple whip, a first in BMX, and he's just an AM! Look out for him in Utah Dew Stop...

The youngest rider for the tour was at the Greenville stop coming in at just 4 years old!

It was a great day and great riding displayed by all the guys, and girl.

Hope this event continues for the future...

Zlatan Ibrahimovic to AC Milan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's arrival seems to AC Milan will take casualties. After striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar wants to migrate, Marco Borriello's turn now.

Borriello felt it would be difficult to obtain the core position in the Rossoneri due to the presence of former striker of Barcelona and Inter Milan. He is now talking with his agent to consider the move. Earlier, the Dutch striker, Klaas Jan Huntelaar also expressed a similar desire.

Tooker and Cooke in Fargo

IMG_3062
Last weekend, Haro brand manager, Allan Cooke and myself went up to Fargo, North Dakota to visit to the local Scheels and ride in a Jam at Dike West Skatepark. Neither of us had been up there before so I knew it was going to be an adventure.

Scheels is a sporting goods store that carries just about everything having to do with outdoor fun. They had the 2011 Haro line out on the floor already. Allan worked pretty hard on the 2011 stuff, so he was pumped to see the bikes in a store for the first time.

Next was the Jam at Dike West. The park was cement and super smooth. I wasn't sure how many kids would make it out to the jam because I'd never thought of Fargo, ND as a place for a BMX scene, but on the day of the jam kids traveled from all over. The turnout was great. The whole day was super chill. We taught the kids how to do flyout barspins and they even got Allan to do a flyout backflip, hahaha!! By the end of the Jam we did a product toss into one of the bowls and all the kids were pumped.

A successful, fun trip to say the least!

Barely Political: Ke$ha and Twitter Parody

I found a couple awesome parodies from Barely Political (the satire group on Youtube that used to have Obama girl) that I needed to post on the blog. The first one is about Ke$ha's intervention:

The second video is about the worthlessness of Twitter as a social media outlet:

I think that the Kesha parody is better than the actual song. The Twitter parody is also pretty good.

Here is my obligatory cute girl to keep my viewers interested (and to provide a cool thumbnail).

In Cincy, 'V' is for 'Votto', and 'Victory'

It has been 73 years since St. Louis Cardinals' Hall of Famer Joe 'Ducky' Medwick hit .374 with 31 homers and 154 rbi to lead the National League in all three categories, in the process becoming the last man to win the 'Triple Crown' in the senior circuit.

It has been 15 years since the Cincinnati Reds won their only NL Central Division crown, and 20 since their last National League pennant and World Series titles in 1990. In fact, it has been a decade now since their last winning season, when the 2000 club led by returning-hometown hero Ken Griffey Jr led the club to a 2nd place finish.

In short, it's been a mostly long, hard ride for the fans of the Redlegs out in western Ohio since the days when Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Tony Perez and the rest of the 'Big Red Machine' under manager Sparky Anderson were dominating the National League during the 1970's.

But in 2010, the winning is back in the Midwest. Victories have piled on top of victories, and the team woke up this morning in first place, 20 games over the .500 mark, 4 games in front of the previously favored St. Louis Cardinals. But the letter 'V' does not only stand for those 'victory' totals this summer in Cincy. The letter also stands for 'Votto', as in Joey Votto, the team's 1st baseman and leader whose performances are MVP caliber, and also have him challenging to win the Triple Crown.

Votto woke up on Saturday morning with a .327 average, 31 homeruns and 91 rbi. He has also scored 90 runs and even stolen 11 bases. Votto's average has him 7 percentage points ahead of fellow Triple Crown contender Albert Pujols and Colorado Rockies' phenom Carlos Gonzalez at the top of the NL leader boards. The 31 homers have him tied for 2nd in the league with Adam Dunn, 4 behind Pujols. The rbi total leaves him 3 behind Pujols.

The fact that both Votto and Pujols are legitimate Triple Crown and Most Valuable Player contenders in the NL is, in fact, being bolstered by the competition to get their respective teams to the top of the NL Central standings at the finish.
And the two clubs will meet one final time head-to-head, next weekend in Saint Louis, in what should be a major showdown for both team and individual honors.

Pujols' place among the leader boards is expected most seasons. He has already won the NL MVP Award three times, including in the last two straight seasons. He is a 5-time winner of the NL Silver Slugger Award as the top offensive player at his position. Twice he has won the NL Hank Aaron Award as the top hitter in the league. His team is also a perennial contender, with the Cards having won the World Series as recently as 2006, another NL pennant in 2004, and the Central Division 7 times in the past decade.

The Reds and Votto have now emerged to challenge on both the individual and team fronts. As a 1st baseman, Votto is a direct challenger to Pujols' dominance of the position over recent years. Here in Philly we are happy to have Ryan Howard and his prodigious power manning 1st base, but the numbers prove out that both Pujols and Votto are far superior all-around offensive threats the 'The Big Piece'.

Many of Votto's hits this year have been of the game-winning or game-changing variety, further highlighting his MVP candidacy. But he is far from the only reason that the Reds are in contention. They have an excellent all-around veteran infield with 3rd baseman Scott Rolen, shortstop Orland Cabrera, and 2nd baseman Brandon Phillips. Right fielder Jay Bruce is considered one of the best up-and-coming players in the game in his own right. Their young pitching staff has deep talent, and is supported by strong closer Francisco Cordero.

The Cincinnati Reds are back, and with players like Joey Votto leading the way, it appears at this point that they will remain strong contenders in the National League for the foreseeable future. That future is bright not just for the team, but also for the 1st baseman himself, who turns 27 years old on September 10th, and is thus only beginning what should be the prime productive years of his career.

Atletico stun Inter to lift SuperCup

After a disappointing first half, Europa League winners Atletico opened the scoring in the 62nd minute through Jose Antonio Reyes with Sergio Aguero grabbing the second eight minutes from the final whistle.

Dementieva led early in the third set and serving for the match at 05.04.

Stoner Fastest, Rossi Complaining

Valentino Rossi failed to record the fastest time in free practice session of the MotoGP Indianapolis, Friday, August 27, 2010. Fiat Yamaha rider was just sitting at number five with a record time of one minute 41.623 seconds.

Sitting as the fastest rider Casey Stoner of Ducati with a time of one minute 40.884 seconds. Jorge Lorenzo, Nicky Hayend, and Dani Pedrosa in a row sat the position of two to four.
