Best Director of the Last Ten Years: Christopher Nolan

Many films released this month, such as 'Black Swan' and '127 Hours', are causing Oscar buzz, but there is one film - that broke Box Office records in the summer of 2010 - that has forgotten to be mentioned...INCEPTION!

You must be aware of the hype by now, a film quite worthy of such praise and intrigue, all thanks to the gloriously experimental mind of English director Christopher Nolan. This man has blessed cinema with adrenaline-filled glossy films, now considered favourites among masses in the last decade. Nolan manages to combine visually-stimulating popcorn movies with ideas of intelligence and psychological exploration.

Mr Nolan's work takes up considerable space on Fl@unt's greatest contemporary film list:

MEMENTO (2000)

A film retracing the lost memories of a central character (Guy Pearce) who suffers from short-term memory loss. His story is portrayed backwards, taking viewers on a reflective, difficult journey of a man who has supposedly lost his wife and his former life. The significance of his existence without memory of the present comes into serious question.

THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)

"Why So Serious?" The Joker of Nolan's second Batman film cackles sinisterly captivating audiences due to his sheer insanity. The association between powerful destruction and cunning intelligence is demolished in this story as the Joker, imaginatively portrayed by the late Heath Ledger, causes havoc out of simple impatience against the ordered way of living.

"You have nothing to threaten me with." After all, how can you harm a man that does not care? Simply evil.

Nolan is continuing his directing reign over the next Batman film, due to hit cinemas in 2012. Hopefully, Inception will gain strongly deserved recognition at this years Oscars. Mr Nolan, long may your directing talents astound us - Fl@unt salutes you.
