Unlikely Places to Find Jobs in America

One of America's hardest hit states for job loss is California. This state is a bell weather watch and always has been for everything from popular trends to the downturn in the American economy. It all tends to begin here first. If California can turn around their jobs situation and their economy then there is hope for the rest of America. They do have the eighth largest economy in the world. Fortunately, as a temporary measure, President Obama did extend unemployment benefits. Some money coming in is better than no money at all for food or rent.

African-Americans bear the brunt of higher unemployment statistically because they are often employed in what used to be stable blue collar jobs like manufacturing. With this economy now the once stable blue collar jobs are lost just like the white collar jobs:

If you are willing to move to where the jobs are then there is hope in North Dakota for Americans in need in many sectors of work:

4 Videos: California Fires 50 Percent Contained

From Denny: After 12 days of raging fire burning up way too much of the Los Angeles area, due to arson, the fires are finally at least 50% contained. It has been so difficult to just sit by and watch all this devastation happening to people, losing their homes and businesses and their family memories.

The same thing happened on the Gulf Coast when the flooding came from Hurricane Katrina. We had a lot of help from California and now, it's my hope, that the Gulf Coast people will give back to their friends in California who helped us in our time of need. Do what you can to donate to organizations like the Red Cross and church groups who are at work in the area.

The good news is that the fire fighters were able to save the famed Mount Wilson observatory where so much history has been made. Reported 6 September:

This was reported on 4 September about the arson, now homicide, investigation:

This was reported on 1 September early on when the fires caught everyone by surprise as to the ferocity of the blazes. Talking to the weatherman, Al Roker, explains how the humidity can help the fire fighters' efforts:

1 Sept: This video gives you insight into the fire fighting from the air in addition to the massive ground operations for a disaster of this magnitude. Fire season in California used to be from the summer into December. For the past three years, because of extreme drought, it is fire season all year round now.

California Wildfires Photos: Frightening and from Space too

From Denny: Check out this link to the British news article of the California wildfires.

The devastation is unbelievable for the land and the people. Just the other day I was reading an account from a psychologist that was posted on Digg about how they felt about this experience. Clearly, the psychologist was overwhelmed and stressed, talking about how this event has taken over their lives locally, fading into the dim background all other news in the country or the world.

Of course, in the back of my mind is the Hurricane Katrina experience after the storm, in my area of the country. I know how difficult it is going to be for the survivors of this California wildfire event to rebuild their lives. The insurance companies will not pay them the full amount for what their premiums have paid. The insurance companies will also drag their feet - for years - to finally pay up - and then only when the customer hires a lawyer to pursue them. All the while the customer may be basically homeless unless they have a friend or relative who can help.

Hopefully, with a responsible person in the White House, Obama may choose to slam the insurance companies into doing responsible and moral business practices. Baring that, the whole country needs to demand legislation from Congress with some strong teeth in it to curb bad dogs big business into submission.

The British news article has photos taken from aerial views as well as from space showing the fires raging and the aftermath of when the fire has passed. Incredible photos that are quite impressive, especially from space, go here.
