The Black Supermodel: New Generation

Although she may not be the first ever black supermodel, there is no doubt that the almighty success of Naomi Campbell's modelling career has paved the way for a younger generation of darker-skinned girls to claim a spot in the modelling industry. In the 1980s Campbell has recalled the beginnings of her career as a lonesome experience in terms of her position as the only black girl being booked for runway shows and major cover deals.

Since then, the supermodel accepts that there are more black girls making it onto the covers of magazines and heading more fashion campaigns. However, Campbell has unfortunately noticed a dip in this elevation, stating that black models are still achieving nowhere near as much recognition as those of lighter skin tone.

Fl@unt has picked out the current run of black modelling talents who continue to gain serious interest from the fashion industry and will hopefully increase this interest in darker-skinned models:

JESSICA WHITE

This graceful dark-skinned beauty, hailing from Buffalo, New York, is steadily gaining the public recognition she deserves. Her angular jawline and profile allow her to step into the world of high fashion, complimented by the feminine softness of her grey eyes and flirty smile which has led White to run campaigns for Maybelline and participate in Victoria's Secret shows. She posses the height and slim figure the industry attends to but also embodies an undeniable sense of woman as she flaunts her natural curves along the runway.

It has come to knowledge however, that White has undergone plastic surgery to alter the shape of her nose. Many would question if this was White's way to move further ahead in the modelling business by moving further away from her ethnicity as a black woman. What do you think? If a woman feels extremely insecure about her appearance than if surgery is the only way she will feel comfortable within herself, Fl@unt cannot completely condemn the process. Having said this, we believe White had nothing to be ashamed of beforehand and was always worthy of the supermodel success she is heading towards today.
