From Denny: This has been an eventful month for screw-ups in the news and it was not lost on the pens of the nation's cartoonists. They had great fun lampooning all the crazy politics, the economy, Arizona style immigration and Big Business on Wall Street. Take a look at the state of the economy in America and then hike on over to The Mother Post over at The Social Poets that contains all the other links to more funny posts and opinion for lots of laughs.

Greedy Opportunistic Wall Street: Political Cartoons, Opinion Post - 24 April 2010

From Denny: Wall Street continues to trumpet it's record MULTI BILLION DOLLARS PROFIT QUARTERS in business after business. Gasoline consumption is way down yet the prices remain high. The President and Congress have done absolutely NOTHING to help the middle class in this area.

They are dragging their feet thinking the average person can keep waiting. Politicians seem to forget the public has been waiting since the last two years of the Bush-Cheney administration when the economy was tanking and millions of jobs were lost and not replaced. Congress and this White House do not appear to possess a sense of urgency because it is not in their face. This White House spends far too much time coddling the Republicans when they should be paying attention to the public needs - not the bankers on Wall Street who created this economic mess in the first place.

These idiot waiting periods like Congress did for the credit card legislation set off an 18 month nightmare for the middle class - forcing a large number of people into bankruptcy. Now Congress has a waiting period for the new health care bill and the health insurance companies have already hit with their first salvo.

Now health insurance companies are outright denying further health insurance to any women who have had breast cancer and surgery. They targeted these women purposefully. They are now telling women they will have to pay for their own surgeries. I suppose this White House - and whoever his really bad advisors are - will tell the President again to not interfere and tame Big Business. This is an outrage. Women and children continue to be classified as second class citizens in this country because Big Business knows there is no one to stop them.

Am I the only blogger or journalist going balls to the wall for the middle class? Does any one seem to care thousands of people are committing suicide, breaking up their marriages, losing their businesses and their homes over financial stresses? There is far too much complacency from the media on the state of the middle class. Right now the middle class has no champion fighting against the odds. Whatever happened to the kind of good character people who used to be part of the media and "challenge the powers that be"? Whatever happened to integrity and courage in this country - especially from the media?

Here's hoping for some decent financial reform instead of the usual weak response from Congress...

Historic Financial OverHaul Long Overdue

From Denny: For years now Big Business has been the 800 pound gorilla on the shoulders of the American middle class, trouncing the economy into tatters. Now it's government's turn to turn the tables and jump on the backs of Big Business, taking them to the woodshed for a good thrashing.

The House has created a new consumer agency to oversee the banking sector and gives new powers to the government to break up big companies that threaten the health of the economy.

With the federal government hiring it does help bring down the jobless rate by a few tenths of a percentage. Well, at least it's going in the right direction. Just a few months ago, we were bleeding 700,000 jobs lost a month when Obama came into office. By November that number had dropped down to 11,000 jobs lost. Of course, it does make you wonder if there are any jobs left to lose in America.

As to so-called American companies taxing tax breaks and then not hiring Americans, hiring overseas, and then returning products to be sold here at a high rate, well, these guys need a rude awakening. Time to start taxing American companies who refuse to hire 80% of their work force in America. It's either that or we start treating them like a foreign country, for all intents and purposes, and put tariffs on their goods sold in America.

Layoff 2009: Gen-X Survival Guide part 1

Layoff 2009: Gen-X Survival Guide part 1

Part One: Suddenly a Statistic

So it's 2009 and you've just spent the past 15 years or so either working, going to school (partying), or pursuing your chosen profession.

You were one of the most experienced guys in the office and confident in your job security. Life inside a yellow and purple cubicle at a major internet company was pretty good. Twin 60inch plasma screens in the lunch room? check. Foosball tables? check. Crazy stories & shocking revelations?? *see confidentiality agreement =)

You had just completed some pretty expensive training on the company dime and were ready settle in for an easy summer of NCAA Women's softball archives, Nascar press conferences, and Disney electronic press kits. Skating down easy street,

Until...

One day, as you walk into the office with your sack lunch and designer messenger bag in tow, your boss and security are waiting for you at the front door.

"Can you come with us please?"

There is no mistake as to where you are going now: to an unmarked conference room, located outside the secure interior of the office to meet with 'HR' Nice touch.

Scenes like this have played out a million times, just this year in the United States.

Suddenly, I too am an unemployment statistic.

The neat, clean, and concise pink slip read something like: 'As you have been informed'..'your position has been eliminated' "career transition", "future endeavors", etc, etc.

Now what?

Don't Panic, Get a Grip!

It's bad news, but not the end of the world. If you got lucky and received severance benefits or even if you didn't, take advantage of this sudden time off to unwind, relax, and get some rest. This is key.

Getting laid-off is a major life event, yes. But you've most likely been busting your tail for years and perhaps slowly losing touch with reality in the process. Take some time off, get some sleep, and enjoy yourself for once. When the shock wears off; take a long, careful look at yourself, your goals, and where you'd like to go next professionally. Most of the people I know who have been laid-off earlier this year say that it was the best thing that ever happened to them, from a motivational standpoint. Just the kick they needed, so to speak.

The daily grind of work tends to separate professionals from the activities and people that they love. Now that you've got some serious spare time on your hands, get out, see the country, visit family, and plug back into the reason you were working in the first place. Take a road trip.

I bought my tickets to the Bonnaroo music festival the day after I received my layoff notice. Needless to say, Bonnaroo was the ultimate way to relax after over a decade of continuous employment. I took 12 days and drove cross-country from Dallas to Nashville to New York City to Atlanta and back to Dallas. I visited friends along the way and made a few new ones. Vacation is exactly what I needed to reset myself

The droning routine of professional life can tend to make people lose touch. Networking can get you everywhere, especially while you are searching for a new gig. Plug back in and start talking to people.

Get Back In Shape

You'll be competing against kids half your age for jobs, better be sharp, better LOOK sharp. It seems that everyone is on a fad diet of some sort these days, but seriously. It's well past time to get your body and your mind back in order. It's never too late to feel great and look good again. The stress and rigors of life are much easier to tackle from a place of health. And besides, looks count, no doubt.

The competition for jobs is fierce with so many job seekers. Although it shouldn't really matter, your appearance can make or break your job chances sometimes. I'm not talking about getting juiced up and hitting the gym hours per day or starving yourself.

I'm talking about finding some form of physical activity or sport that you love and getting out there. The gym isn't for everyone. That's ok. Play soccer, ride bikes, whatever- just get active. It does wonders.

Get yourself moving and you'll be surprised at how fast you can get back into decent shape with a little effort. Eat less, exercise more. It works.

Wellness looks fantastic

What next?

stay tuned
