Opinion: Who should get Osama Bin Laden's 25 Million Dollar Bounty?

Osama Bin Laden was killed in Abottabad, Pakistan on May 2, 2011 by U.S. Special Forces. The question now, however, is who should collect the 25 million dollar bounty (27 million if you count the 2 million donated by the pilots association) for information leading to his capture or death. In this piece, I express my opinion on the question of who should get the bounty.


Before I get to the answer to this question, let me first explore three obvious possibilities for how the bounty should be used and give a little commentary on each of them. These possibilities are listed below:

1. The United States government: This is one possible option for the reward to be distributed, but not a very good one in my opinion. 25 million compared to the annual budget of the U.S. is nothing, something akin to an ordinary person finding a quarter in the vending machine coin return. Even though it might sound good for PR (and I'm sure a few Tea Party types will mention it), I think the money should go to a better cause than something cheesy like paying off the national debt or given as as part of a tax refund.

2. The victims of the 911 attacks: Here again, this is a seemingly good move on paper, but I also think it has a few problems. First, the reward is for information leading to his capture or death. As much as the families of the 911 victims suffered from the terrorist attacks, they didn't directly aid in Bin Laden's capture. Also, this would ignore the suffering of other people, both here and throughout the world, that have suffered at the hands of Bin Laden. What about the families of the victims of the bombing of the USS Cole or the African Embassy bombings?

3. The JSOC and SEAL team: To me, this option makes the most sense. These -- the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) and the Navy Seals Team 6 -- are the folks directly involved in Bin Laden's execution. Why not give them both the credit AND a small monetary reward? Divided among the approximately 5000 people thought to work for JSOC and in the SEALS team, this would work out to about 5000 dollars a piece -- enough for a nice vacation for the employees' families.

From Denny:   The year just marches on, doesn't it?  This is a roundup of the past three weeks of various posts.  Oh, how I wish I had the time to write more science posts as I do enjoy being curious about my world.  If it were not for the tense political times requiring constant attention I'd be off writing about art, science, poetry, lots of food,  photography and total humor.

With all the tough economic times it seems like we all have to stay on top of our politicians to get the very best from them.  These days with so much in flux economically, politically, rogue countries struggling to become nuclear states and the last gasps of terrorist organizations still rearing their ugly little heads, I'm focused on writing mostly news.  Like you, I long for a time when Life is easier and a lot more enjoyable.  Those times will come again.  Try to be patient.  And while you are being patient, keep your foot in the backs of your politicians, making them crystal clear aware of what you voted for is what you expect to be delivered.  Game on! :)

Political Cartoons: Local and World Economy - 22 May 2010




From Denny: Our world economy lurches forward two steps and back one step, lurches forward again three steps and back two. Government leaders are forced to make tough decisions now for the leaders before them who refused to curb lavish spending like there was no tomorrow.

For years the demography folks have been advising businesses and governments that as the large Baby Boomer generation ages it will retire from regular or lavish spending into the economy. How could no one see this coming? The younger generations are not large enough to support the Baby Boomers.

Already, for the past few years, you see too much office space for lease - and that was before the world economy took a down turn. In a nutshell, if the Baby Boomers don't support a business niche then expect that niche to downsize or disappear.

Business has become spoiled from the Baby Boomer's support and expanded their businesses to feed the larger generation's appetite. Now that they have reached middle age - up to their eyeballs in debt with college expenses for their kids, medical and retirement home expenses for aging WW2 generation parents, mortgage debt and massive job lay-offs - the Boomers are tapped out.

Look at it this way, at least we are all in the same boat. :) There are worldwide recessions and financial issues. How we come out of this generational crisis is up to us.

The first smart thing is to get off credit cards and stay off them. The Big Banks and Big Business have been capricious and cavalier with their customers. They changed contracts on a whim and charge excessive usury.

The world has tilted to the favor of greedy excessive Big Business to the point that accounts in good standing can no longer afford to pay back their debts. This is where the role of good government comes in to balance the inequities and crooked business practices. Without government leaders acting as champions of the middle class, then expect more turmoil until someone grows the courage to right the wrongs.

Posts Roundup This Week at Dennys Blogs - 16 May 2010

From Denny: This sure has been quite the week with the drama unfolding out in the Gulf of Mexico with the BP oil spill off my Louisiana coast. The cartoonists have had great fun lampooning the various lies and finger pointing from the CEOs involved. The better news is that BP is finally making a bit of headway on corralling some of the oil for clean up, siphoning it into a tanker.

Some headway is better than nothing and at least it has slowed down the rate of gushing oil and natural gas for the moment. Definitely better than using an atomic bomb to blow up the well like the crazy Russians suggested. There's a plan. Nuke the Gulf of Mexico and irradiate the ocean waters for the next thousand years. Fortunately, BP and the government are contemplating lesser crazy options.

As a result of the oil spill there are countless great political cartoons and funny videos by the likes of Colbert to enjoy. And Betty White was the toast of late night TV on SNL after turning in some hilarious performances. She then proceeded to go out all night carousing with the SNL cast after the show. She's almost 89 years old and there's no time to waste for having fun! :)

World Economy Political Cartoons - 15 May 2010

From Denny: The business world is collectively holding its breath as Greece rocks off the financial cliff toward bankruptcy. Many speculate if Greece goes off that cliff, so do several other countries, taking down with it all of the European Union. Hopefully, the current financial situation won't prove to be that dramatic.

Meanwhile, the past week since the British elections turned in a confusing three-way tie - with plenty of jokes about Number 10 Downing Street has now been zoned as a duplex - there has been a rush to elevate one leader. David Cameron emerged as the latest choice, hopefully, to win the day. He, too, is well aware how imperative it is to chart a sound course for the United Kingdom. They face financial ruin inside a two year window if they don't get a hold of their economy.

Well, with the economic chaos swirling around us we might as well enjoy the lighter side of politics and what the cartoonists have to comment and lampoon in our societies!
