World Economy Political Cartoons - 15 May 2010

From Denny: The business world is collectively holding its breath as Greece rocks off the financial cliff toward bankruptcy. Many speculate if Greece goes off that cliff, so do several other countries, taking down with it all of the European Union. Hopefully, the current financial situation won't prove to be that dramatic.

Meanwhile, the past week since the British elections turned in a confusing three-way tie - with plenty of jokes about Number 10 Downing Street has now been zoned as a duplex - there has been a rush to elevate one leader. David Cameron emerged as the latest choice, hopefully, to win the day. He, too, is well aware how imperative it is to chart a sound course for the United Kingdom. They face financial ruin inside a two year window if they don't get a hold of their economy.

Well, with the economic chaos swirling around us we might as well enjoy the lighter side of politics and what the cartoonists have to comment and lampoon in our societies!

Greek Debt Crisis 4 The World: Political Cartoons 8 May 2010

Photo by I'm Fantastic @ flickr

From Denny: Greece is not the only European country with financial troubles, required to cut back on its spending ways and lavish lifestyle. Other countries may be following on their heels: Portugal, Spain, Ireland and Italy. Hopefully not but maybe so. Right now the Greek government agreed to Germany's austerity conditions in exchange for a bailout of epic proportions even for this Drama King culture.

The Greeks are not happy about cutbacks. Apparently, this generation does not seem to understand the concept of sacrifice as previous generations did. There is no time like the present to find out what it means. Even an ancient culture such as this one is only as good as its current generation chooses to be good or foolish stewards of what previous generations gifted them.

I'm sure when the American and European economies began to falter, experiencing our own cutbacks of services, lavish lifestyles and massive job loss, out the window went the tourism industry the Greeks once enjoyed to fuel their economy. Looks like we all have to "stay-cation" now in our own countries and literally our own back yards until things improve. We all need to get serious about broadening our economies to not depend upon only one industry for income.

And along the same thinking of the comedy movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"

E.U. 21st Century = U.S.S.R. 20th Century?

What lies behind the creation of the European Union, once believed to be simply a device to expand economic relationships and opportunities, but now quite obviously a major attack on individual nationhood? Could this same fate of sacrificing national sovereignty for some ideology occur here in the United States of America?

In 1957 six countries - West Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands - signed what became known as the 'Treaties of Rome' establishing a 'European Economic Community' which was an effort to both foster economic opportunity and to begin stepping away from the nationalism that many saw as the root cause of the two world wars that had devastated the continent during the first half of the 20th century.

In 1973 this union of nations was enlarged when Great Britain, Ireland and Denmark joined what had become known as the 'European Community' with institutions covering the economy, energy, and major industry. By the end of the 70's the first direct democratic elections to a 'European Parliament' were being held.

During the 1980's, Greece, Spain and Portugal all joined and a policy of open borders was developed that eliminated the need for passports across all of Europe. In 1986 a European flag was adopted and the 'Single European Act' was signed by member nations. This act expanded on the earlier 'Treaties of Rome' and set the goal of having a common market by the end of 1992.

On November 1st, 1993 the 'Maastricht Treaty' came into force. Signed by member nations in February of '92, the treaty formally established the EU and set into motion the creation of the 'Euro' as an official currency. Sweden, Finland and Austria joined up during the 90's, and in 2002 the euro replaced the old national currency in all of the member states.

During the last decade the membership role of nations exploded into eastern Europe to include places like Poland, Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic, bringing to 27 the current total number of member states, though only 16 are included in what is known as the 'Eurozone' by accepting the euro as their official currency.

On December 1st, 2009 the 'Treaty of Lisbon' came into force after it was signed back in December of '07. This treaty basically centralized power and formalized the state symbols in the EU, weakening democracy by moving true power away from the voters in each nation and handing it over to the EU power structure, and moving one step closer to erasing individual nationalism.

It also established the first-ever official head of state, a long term 'President of the European Council' who is appointed to a 2 1/2 year term by the Council and who may be reappointed one time. Herman Van Rompuy of Belgium was selected as the first President, and is serving now until at least May of 2012.

It further and perhaps most frighteningly established an agency known as 'EuroPol', the European Police Force having full diplomatic immunity in enforcing criminal counts that include, as pointed out by former Soviet political prisoner Vladimir Bukovsky, nebulous charges such as 'racism' and 'xenophobia'.

As Bukovsky pointed out in a recent piece for the Cato Institute: "the authorities have already explained to us, in a very quiet manner, that those who might object to the immigration policy of the EU can be accused of racism. And those who oppose further integration of Europe can be charged with xenophobia."

The structure of the European Parliament was described as a "mad house" that makes the old Supreme Soviet of the USSR look "like a model legislature" due to it's 1,200-1,400 members who do not have a central meeting place and whose members normally only have an opportunity to speak in front of the group for meer minutes each year.

Why is it important to point out the old Soviet Union, which led the way to disillusionment, imprisonment, and death to millions of people during the 20th century? Because the EU is heading down the exact same socialist path, a path that has also reared it's ugly head in America with the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency here.

Back in the 1980's, with Gorbachev sensing power slipping from the increasingly damaged Soviet Union but still believing in the ideology of socialism, he met with the leaders of Europe's leftist parties who shared this vision and together they launched 'Common European Home', a project to organize socialism across all of Europe. They threw all of their considerable support behind the formation of the EU for this very purpose.

In today's Europe, behind the names and lines on your map and the pride of the people in the individual nations, a monster is swallowing up the old world. This behemoth is known as the European Union, a socialist body of cronyism and central government planning. Before the end of this century, if nothing major changes, it will lead to the same disaster that became of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the Soviet Union, in the 20th century.

The great challenge here in the United States is the same as it was during the USSR-led rush to embrace communism and socialism in the last century. That challenge is to not be a follower and join in the rush to give up our national greatness and identity, as well as our individual freedoms. It is the challenge to instead be a leader in the fight for freedom and democracy.

The American people still have the power that the European people have slowly allowed their politicians and power brokers to negotiate away from them. We have the power to stand up and be counted, to kick the socialists and central planners out on their cans, and to hold true to the values and vision of our Constitution.

Will the United States follow the European Union, which itself is following the old Soviet Union, down the path toward socialism by beginning to form some 'North American Union' with Mexico, Canada, and other nations of the Americas, yielding our power and our pride to some nebulous central authority? Or will we stand strong for true democracy and the individual freedoms and liberties given to us as true gifts from God himself? Only the passage of 21st century time will tell.

Islamism Series: Our Grandchildren's Grandchildren

I recently had the pleasure of sitting in on a highly educational presentation by an American law enforcement professional that largely covered the topic of responding to a bombing or other terrorist attack in our city.

The individual presenting the class has been all over the world, particularly the hot spots in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and South America, aiding in their responses to such incidents. Perhaps most importantly, he was also gaining an education and making vital contacts that would keep him abreast on the latest information from those far-flung locales regarding updated terrorist activities, attacks, and tactics.

One of the statements that he made that I found most compelling is something that I have believed for a long time. That no matter who is elected to become the next President of the United States, no matter whether we 'bring the troops home' or remain committed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and possibly expand the current conflict into Iran eventually, this is not a war that is going to end any time soon. His simple statement was this: "Your grandchildren's grandchildren will be fighting this war."

He had a very simple, straightforward reason for making this statement. The Islamists with whom we are at war have no intention of stopping until Islam is in control of the entire world. War has been declared on us over a decade ago. Our nation was directly attacked, and has had repeated attempted attacks on it. Our allies have been and are being attacked regularly.

Spain is the perfect example of how they intend to win. On March 11th, 2004, the Islamists bombed trains in Madrid, immediately resulting in 191 killed and over 1,800 wounded. They demanded that Spain pull out of Iraq, and told the Spanish people that they would pay for their governments involvement. Out of this fear, Spaniards went to the polls in elections held shortly after the bombings and voted out the democratic government, voting in a Socialist government that pulled Spain's troops. The Islamists had effected a coup d'etat, installed a sympathetic government to their cause, and cowed a member of the European Union. They had knocked a government with close ties to the U.S. out of power, and effectively ordered it replaced with one that is antagonistic towards America.

Frankly, thanks to the fear of the Spanish people, the Islamists won a great victory. The victory became complete when this summer the Spanish courts tossed out more convictions, including of the mastermind of the attacks, raising to 11 the number who have been acquitted, with a number of others receiving extremely lenient sentences. The Islamists have incited riots in the suburbs of Paris, and attacked London as well, and are well on their way to creating an almost riotous situation across all of Europe.

What will likely happen on the European continent over the next few years and decades could make the 9/11 attacks look paltry by comparison. They saw how we reacted to 9/11, firing overseas and lighting up their world, including overthrowing the Islamist Taliban in Afghanistan and the tyrannical regime of Sadaam Hussein in Iraq. They find the response of the Europeans much softer, and so for now will simply be happy with turning their attention to slowly overwhelming our allies, who have proven to be far more soft.

The hard fact seems to be that the American people, at least right now, don't have the stomach to win the war being fought. They understandably want peace, a return to a time when American soldiers weren't in harms way, and when everyone can just sit down and talk out our differences. The unfortunate reality is that the other side in this battle doesn't want that, and will fight to the death. Because we may be unwilling to make the significant sacrifices now that it will take to overcome this global threat, we are likely to pay even greater costs in the generations to come.

I have two grandchildren now. My grandson was just born on August 1st of this year. It is highly likely that he, or his children, or his grandchildren, my grandchildren's grandchildren, will be fighting a much bloodier and far broader war at some future time because today's generation was unwilling to go all the way to victory.

Georgia On My Mind

For those who care mostly about the MLB standings, the Wii gaming system, SportsCenter, poetry, kittens, and puffy white clouds, you might want to stop reading now. For those who truly understand why we are fighting the roots of terrorism overseas, who understand that much more is at stake in the upcoming election than some generic 'Change', and who care about the world around them, this article is for you. Russia has invaded Georgia. Anyone with an understanding of history and basic human freedoms will get why that is important, but for the great unwashed I will try to paint a simple picture of what is happening behind the headlines that you have seen in the papers and on the TV and internet news. First, who are the combatants? The true big bully in this event is Russia, the behemoth nation stretching from Europe to Asia. They are by far the largest country in the world, controlling 1/8 of the world's land area. At 142 million people, they have the 9th-largest population on earth. They are an 'energy superpower', holding the world's greatest reserves of mineral and overall energy resources. Within their territory can be found the world's largest forest reserves, and 1/4 of the world's unfrozen fresh water. Oh, and they are also a military nuclear superpower. Russia, or the Russian Federation as it is also known, is a giant country made up of 83 federal 'subjects'. Think sort of like the USA incorporating 50 states and other territories. Part of the recent Russian past, of course, is that they were once the USSR, the Soviet Union, comprised of 'Mother Russia' and a number of surrounding provinces, one of which was Georgia. These provinces broke away from Soviet control in the late 1980's and early 90's for many reasons that would take too long to explain in this article. Suffice it to say that Georgia gained its independence, or should I say regained it, in 1991, and since has become a blossoming, albeit small, Democratic Republic with a President at the head of a nation that has U.N. membership and is seeking entry into both NATO in the short term and the European Union in the long term. After the Russian Revolution in the early 20th century the country, which is made up of 4.4 million people who are more than 80% ethnic Georgians, gained independence for a few years, but was over-run and gobbled up by the Soviet Union in 1922. Sound familiar? Georgians remember it all too well, those seven decades under repressive Soviet Communist rule, and they not surprisingly want no part of a repeat performance. In recent years Russia, under former President and current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, has been again flexing its muscles and declaring after a decade and a half on the back-burner of world influence that they again want to emerge as an active world power. This has made the small countries on its borders, especially the former Soviet Republics like Georgia, nervous that Russia will attempt at some point to again take over control of their territories. What happened in this particular current conflict is that on August 8th, Georgian military forces surrounded areas within its borders known as South Ossetia and Abkhazia. These areas are largely Russian by ethnicity, and had been acting for some time as independent regions. Georgia claimed that attacks had recently been occurring from within these regions against surrounding towns and villages, so they moved to protect those areas and get South Ossetia and Abkhazia under control. When Georgia made this military move, Russia responded by entering the areas to battle the Georgian troops, claiming that they were 'protecting' ethnic Russians. Bottom line is that you have small areas in northern Georgia, bordering on southern Russia, that are in dispute as to national control. The areas have been considered Georgian by territory, Russian by ethnicity, but by themselves want to be independent. The likelihood is that the sizes of the South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions will not allow them to be independent. Either Georgia or Russia will incorporate these areas. The fighting now is over which will take control. The problem is that a diplomatic solution was not attempted. Rather, Russia moved militarily once it saw Georgia take action to solidify its current loose hold on those areas. This would be something geographically akin to residents of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan declaring their independence, the US moving to gain control militarily, and Canada coming in on the side of the Upper Peninsulans. The fear is that Russia might use this border dispute to completely overthrow the Georgian democratic government and take control of the entire country. And this could be a precursor to their moving to forcibly reincorporate other surrounding independent Republics into the Russian Federation. Why that should worry you is two-fold: one, democracy matters. Georgians are currently a free people with elected, accountable leaders similar to the US; and two, Georgia is an ally of the United States, which means that we are both morally and politically tied to them. The United States cannot stand by and allow Georgia to be overrun, and still consider itself any kind of military power. And I think we all know what a military showdown between the United States and Russia can lead to: think World War III. You think that is overblown? Then you simply don't understand how previous major wars between superpowers have begun, and need to educate yourself a little more on history. Right now you can be assured that besides the public denouncements coming from people such as President George Bush and The Vatican, you have tons of back-room negotiations going on to resolve this dispute before it becomes a true international crisis. Pay attention to what is happening, follow the articles and stories, because it is more important to you and your family than the latest video game or sporting contest or vacation trip. If you don't currently have Georgia on your mind, you should.
