Greek Debt Crisis 4 The World: Political Cartoons 8 May 2010

Photo by I'm Fantastic @ flickr

From Denny: Greece is not the only European country with financial troubles, required to cut back on its spending ways and lavish lifestyle. Other countries may be following on their heels: Portugal, Spain, Ireland and Italy. Hopefully not but maybe so. Right now the Greek government agreed to Germany's austerity conditions in exchange for a bailout of epic proportions even for this Drama King culture.

The Greeks are not happy about cutbacks. Apparently, this generation does not seem to understand the concept of sacrifice as previous generations did. There is no time like the present to find out what it means. Even an ancient culture such as this one is only as good as its current generation chooses to be good or foolish stewards of what previous generations gifted them.

I'm sure when the American and European economies began to falter, experiencing our own cutbacks of services, lavish lifestyles and massive job loss, out the window went the tourism industry the Greeks once enjoyed to fuel their economy. Looks like we all have to "stay-cation" now in our own countries and literally our own back yards until things improve. We all need to get serious about broadening our economies to not depend upon only one industry for income.

And along the same thinking of the comedy movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"

Polish President's Plane Crashes in Russia - No Survivors

Another crisis for Europe? Just what we needed.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and his entire entourage of Polish officials perished as his plane went down while attempting to land in western Russia, reportedly in "bad weather". Kaczynski was headed to Russia to commemorate the massacre of Polish soldiers by the Soviet Union during World War II.

The President was one of the Kaczynski twins... somewhat known as political rock stars in Europe. A huge number of Polish officials were on the flight. Luckily the Polish Prime Minister traveled to Russia for ceremonies earlier in the week and was on a different plane, part of a different delegation. But much of the government of a major European Country has just been lost in one incident.

This will be a developing story throughout the day and into next week. A huge story in Europe for sure.

Tensions may rise as the two Countries - Russia & Poland - generally don't get along. Kaczynski was considered pro-U.S. (perhaps too much so), but was disliked by the Russian government. So this could muddy relations between Russia & Poland, between Russia & the U.S., and between Russia & The West (NATO/EU). It could be a setback to what little progress has been made in relations between the U.S. & Russia and between Russia & Poland.

Poland is part of the geo-political chess board of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus where the U.S. and Russia are still fighting the Cold War, battling for influence and dominance (no the Cold War never really ended unfortunately...have been very annoyed by the fact that Obama has decided to keep it going). Other parts of that active chess board include the Czech Republic, Georgia, Ukraine, Kosovo, and Kyrgyzstan - another Country in chaos that the U.S. wants to maintain a footprint in...even though we shouldn't be there (recent events prove my point for why we should avoid these unstable Countries). The argument that the U.S. needs an airbase in Kyrgyzstan to support operations in Afghanistan is completely bogus. It's nonsense. The U.S. presence in and around these Countries has been more destabilizing than helpful. It has been destabilizing for the Countries, for the regions, for Europe & Central Asia, and for the world.

It would make more sense for Russia to hand the investigation over to a third party commission.... or any neutral party... such as the EU, OSCE, or the UN. I don't know if the people of Poland will accept anything that the Russians say.

E.U. 21st Century = U.S.S.R. 20th Century?

What lies behind the creation of the European Union, once believed to be simply a device to expand economic relationships and opportunities, but now quite obviously a major attack on individual nationhood? Could this same fate of sacrificing national sovereignty for some ideology occur here in the United States of America?

In 1957 six countries - West Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands - signed what became known as the 'Treaties of Rome' establishing a 'European Economic Community' which was an effort to both foster economic opportunity and to begin stepping away from the nationalism that many saw as the root cause of the two world wars that had devastated the continent during the first half of the 20th century.

In 1973 this union of nations was enlarged when Great Britain, Ireland and Denmark joined what had become known as the 'European Community' with institutions covering the economy, energy, and major industry. By the end of the 70's the first direct democratic elections to a 'European Parliament' were being held.

During the 1980's, Greece, Spain and Portugal all joined and a policy of open borders was developed that eliminated the need for passports across all of Europe. In 1986 a European flag was adopted and the 'Single European Act' was signed by member nations. This act expanded on the earlier 'Treaties of Rome' and set the goal of having a common market by the end of 1992.

On November 1st, 1993 the 'Maastricht Treaty' came into force. Signed by member nations in February of '92, the treaty formally established the EU and set into motion the creation of the 'Euro' as an official currency. Sweden, Finland and Austria joined up during the 90's, and in 2002 the euro replaced the old national currency in all of the member states.

During the last decade the membership role of nations exploded into eastern Europe to include places like Poland, Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic, bringing to 27 the current total number of member states, though only 16 are included in what is known as the 'Eurozone' by accepting the euro as their official currency.

On December 1st, 2009 the 'Treaty of Lisbon' came into force after it was signed back in December of '07. This treaty basically centralized power and formalized the state symbols in the EU, weakening democracy by moving true power away from the voters in each nation and handing it over to the EU power structure, and moving one step closer to erasing individual nationalism.

It also established the first-ever official head of state, a long term 'President of the European Council' who is appointed to a 2 1/2 year term by the Council and who may be reappointed one time. Herman Van Rompuy of Belgium was selected as the first President, and is serving now until at least May of 2012.

It further and perhaps most frighteningly established an agency known as 'EuroPol', the European Police Force having full diplomatic immunity in enforcing criminal counts that include, as pointed out by former Soviet political prisoner Vladimir Bukovsky, nebulous charges such as 'racism' and 'xenophobia'.

As Bukovsky pointed out in a recent piece for the Cato Institute: "the authorities have already explained to us, in a very quiet manner, that those who might object to the immigration policy of the EU can be accused of racism. And those who oppose further integration of Europe can be charged with xenophobia."

The structure of the European Parliament was described as a "mad house" that makes the old Supreme Soviet of the USSR look "like a model legislature" due to it's 1,200-1,400 members who do not have a central meeting place and whose members normally only have an opportunity to speak in front of the group for meer minutes each year.

Why is it important to point out the old Soviet Union, which led the way to disillusionment, imprisonment, and death to millions of people during the 20th century? Because the EU is heading down the exact same socialist path, a path that has also reared it's ugly head in America with the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency here.

Back in the 1980's, with Gorbachev sensing power slipping from the increasingly damaged Soviet Union but still believing in the ideology of socialism, he met with the leaders of Europe's leftist parties who shared this vision and together they launched 'Common European Home', a project to organize socialism across all of Europe. They threw all of their considerable support behind the formation of the EU for this very purpose.

In today's Europe, behind the names and lines on your map and the pride of the people in the individual nations, a monster is swallowing up the old world. This behemoth is known as the European Union, a socialist body of cronyism and central government planning. Before the end of this century, if nothing major changes, it will lead to the same disaster that became of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the Soviet Union, in the 20th century.

The great challenge here in the United States is the same as it was during the USSR-led rush to embrace communism and socialism in the last century. That challenge is to not be a follower and join in the rush to give up our national greatness and identity, as well as our individual freedoms. It is the challenge to instead be a leader in the fight for freedom and democracy.

The American people still have the power that the European people have slowly allowed their politicians and power brokers to negotiate away from them. We have the power to stand up and be counted, to kick the socialists and central planners out on their cans, and to hold true to the values and vision of our Constitution.

Will the United States follow the European Union, which itself is following the old Soviet Union, down the path toward socialism by beginning to form some 'North American Union' with Mexico, Canada, and other nations of the Americas, yielding our power and our pride to some nebulous central authority? Or will we stand strong for true democracy and the individual freedoms and liberties given to us as true gifts from God himself? Only the passage of 21st century time will tell.

Videos: Hidden Bank Practices Regarding Deceptive Fees

From Denny: This will get your blood boiling fast for sure! Educate yourself how to handle your banking relationship as American and European banks work overtime to make the consumer pay for the bank's bad investment choices.

Note: Royal Bank of Scotland took bailout money from two countries - America and the United Kingdom and then had the nerve to tell everyone they were refusing to loan any money to the same taxpayers, preferring to apply the bailout money to its profit line.

There are several videos on this subject to give you an overview of how the banking trend has been developing for some time and appears to not to be going away any time in this generation unless the public gets serious about pushback.

Why are banks raising their fees? This was reported 17 July 2009 and explains the banking position which Americans are so angry about getting caught in like a vice grip:

This was reported at the beginning of American ire against the banks right after the taxpayer bailouts infuriated everyone:

This video goes all the way back to 10 June 2005, discussing bank fees. Note that this is about 10 months after Hurricane Katrina hit, causing economic devastation that reveberated throughout the economy. Banks have been getting to the consumer for five years now!

5 Videos: G20 Conference Highlights, World Sanctions Against Iran, Obamas Vision, Diplomatic Security Story, How Irans People Will Fare Under New Sanctions

From Denny: First up, the G20 took aim at American CEOs ridiculously high compensation bonuses. Isn't it something that it takes outside countries to lobby for the American people when our own representatives in Congress lobby against us? Some seriously screwed up priorities in politics these days. What the G20 did try to address are some better standards for the global economy to keep the chaos down to a minimum.

Of course, Europe isn't exactly the standard bearer to defend the American people. They are really defending their own wallets when their treasuries invest in America. Hey, a left-handed warrior is better than none. The American people will take all the defenders from all quarters at this point: "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" works nicely here.

Here's the beginning coverage of the G20 conference where President Obama set out a sweeping new vision for America's foreign policy.

This is a bit of a grinner as the delegates gathered:

This is an exclusive report from CBS News about the United Nations security, where most of the delegates met prior to the G20 conference. Talk about a nightmare! I still remember being in Rome, Italy when the Pope died and observed how the Italians shut down the entire city as diplomats, world leaders and well-wishers began to flood the city:

Here's a good report on what world sanctions could mean for Iran's people. They are already groaning under the weight of a bad economy where everything costs alarmingly more than it did in previous better times.

Live Free or Die

When I took my high school civics course, the teacher omitted one of the most important lessons: There’s no “free” lunch, and the biggest prices for free lunches come when they are served up by government. Those free lunches are seductive and hard to turn down, but the price is paid in growing increments of your freedom.

Mark Steyn, author of the classic America Alone, and a writer whose column appears in The Bulletin, makes this point brilliantly in a lecture prepared for Hillsdale College and reprinted in its publication, Imprimis. He writes that when he first moved to New Hampshire, he thought its motto, “Live free or die!” was formulated right before a battle to fire the troops up. Then he found that Gen. John Stark, a hero of the American Revolution, made that statement decades after battle in a letter explaining why he could not attend a dinner.

Due to health problems, he could not attend the 32nd reunion of the Battle of Bennington, but in his letter he formulated the motto, “Live free or die; Death is not the worst of evils.” The shorter version survived to become the state motto of New Hampshire.

Mr. Steyn said he found that was even more impressive and important coming at such a time long after battle. He reasoned it is easy to be prepared to battle for freedom in extreme times, but it is equally important to be so prepared at all other times: “It’s a bold statement of the reality of our lives in the prosperous West. You can live as free men, but if you choose not to, your society will soon die.”

In the same vein, he says everyone assumes his book America Alone is about radical Islam. He writes people assume it’s about “firebreathing imams, the excitable young men jumping up and down in the street doing the old ‘Death to the Great Satan’ dance. It’s not. It’s about us. It’s about a possibly terminal manifestation of an old civilizational temptation: Indolence, as Machiavelli understood, is the greatest enemy of a republic.”

You might say that eternal vigilance is the price of freedom, and indolence is the formula for loss of that freedom.

Mr. Steyn discusses what can kill our republic, and it is an enemy within … our own indolence and our lack of commitment to the motto “Live free or die!” He does this in an article in one of my favorite publications, Imprimis (April 2009). It’s a free, monthly publication but 10 times as valuable as most of the mainstream media such as The New York Times. (Call 800-437-2268 for a free subscription.)

Mr. Steyn started figuring this out when he ran into trouble in Canada with their so-called “human rights” commissions that accused his writings of being Islamophobic. He said he could not understand how, in this matter, the progressive left was making common cause with radical Islam. But then he realized what the two groups have in common overrides any seeming superficial differences:

Big government progressives and political Islam recoil from the concept of the citizen, of the free individual entrusted to operate within his own societal space, assume his responsibilities and exploit his potential.”

In most of the developed West, the citizen is losing his autonomy. The state is slowly taking over all of the responsibilities of the citizen — health care, child care, care of the elderly, etc. — “to the point where it’s effectively severed its citizens from humanity’s primal instincts, not least the survival instinct.”

Europe’s addiction to big government, unaffordable entitlements, cradle-to-grave welfare and a dependence on mass immigration is leading to its extinction. Now the U.S. is starting down the same road. President Barack Obama is giving the U.S. what has virtually destroyed Europe. He’s giving us big government, big taxes, unprecedented budgets, unsustainable deficits and national debt, and a welfare explosion with health care on the way and universal college education at government expense.

There are many problems with the European/Obama approach. The math just doesn’t add up. It is unsustainable. In Sweden, state spending amounts to 54 percent of GDP. In America we’re already up to 40 percent and, in four years, we’ll be approaching Sweden.

Incidentally, after the greatest, most undisciplined spending splurge in American history, President Obama recently said our spending, deficits and debt is unsustainable. He runs up more debt than all 43 previous presidents combined. And only then the Messiah Obama has figured out our spending is unsustainable. Now, all he has to figure out is who is responsible for all that spending — none other than Barack Hussein Obama.

But Mr. Steyn argues it’s not just the spending, the deficits, the debt, the out-of-control budgets and the financial statement of the nation that is the worst part of the problem. He said even if someone would write a check for all that spending, the damage would still be done: “Even if there were no financial consequences, the moral and even spiritual consequences would still be fatal. That’s the stage Europe’s at.”

We’re in a deep financial hole, losing our financial health, but more importantly, we’re in the process of surrendering our freedom and liberty to a big brother state. As government expands, freedom contracts. Big government provides a certain comfort to citizens, but it comes at an unacceptable price of loss of freedom.

Mr. Steyn points to the George Mason University survey of freedom in the U.S. The five least free states are Maryland, California, Rhode Island, New Jersey and the least free state, New York. Like the U.S., New York is in a financial hole and doesn’t know how to get out of it. So what does Gov. David Paterson of New York do to get out of the hole? He comes up with the biggest tax increase in New York history. He’s adopting the Obama strategy of assuming you can spend your way out of excessive spending by more spending.

Stage One: Your Worries Disappear With Your Freedom

There are various stages to Machiavelli’s “indolence.” The first stage comes when the government comes out with every program needed to make all your worries disappear — about your mortgage, your health, care of the elderly and everything else. As government moves in, there are strings attached. Once it gives banks or car companies money, it gets involved with many aspects of their business. The same for citizens.

Once it provides health care, it reasons if it controls your health care, it should have a say in all the things that determine your health. For example, in Britain, the obese are not entitled to hip and knee replacements. There are all kinds of such rules and all kinds of inconsistencies in such rules about life style choices and right to care. But as Mr. Steyn explains it, “Tyranny is always whimsical.”

Stage Two: Government’s Gifts Come With Strings Attached

What we’ve just described is that government’s beneficence comes with commands. In Britain, to save the planet, there is an extra tax on each trip beyond one a citizen makes. This really sounds like the way the Soviet’s controlled movement through requirements of exit visas. Now the British are doing that with exit taxes. In stage two, the state starts regulating your behavior.

There’s more and more of this regulation of behavior as citizens become wards of the state, with provision of their health, their education, their housing, etc.

Stage Three: Once Transformed To Wards Of The State, Government Regulates What You Think

Stage three comes when having made citizens wards of the state; there is an attempt to regulate not only what you do, but also what they think. In Canada, the government keeps foreign newspapers, foreign television operators and foreign bookstores out of Canada. And then it assumes that it has a right to police the ideas disseminated by the local newspapers, broadcasters and bookstores they allow to operate.

Stage Four: Big Brother Tells You What Not To Think

Then comes stage four, in which dissenting ideas and even words are labeled as “hatred.” In Britain, an author interviewed on BBC politely expressed concerns about gay adoption. He was investigated by Scotland Yard’s Community Safety Unit for Homophobic, Racist and Domestic Incidents. Mr. Steyn gives other examples that include the arrest and jailing of a Daily Telegraph columnist for a joke in a speech.

Mr. Steyn summarizes how government expansion leads to freedom contraction in places like England, Canada and even the U.S. He writes:

“The massive expansion of government under the laughable euphemism of ‘stimulus’ (Stage One) comes with a quid pro quo down the line (Stage Two): Once you accept you’re a child in a government nursery, why shouldn’t Nanny tell you what to do? And then — Stage Three — what to think? And — Stage Four — what you’re forbidden to think …”

Stage Five: The Descent Into Torpor And Triviality: The End Of Excellence And Achievement

And then comes Stage Five, the final stage. That’s where Europe is. It is producing nothing of excellence. No great science or great art. That’s still found in America. Europe isn’t even producing enough families to maintain its population. It is shrinking in population, productivity, power and seems on its way to extinction. Charles Murray, author of In Our Hands, explains this development: “Give people plenty and security, and they will fall into spiritual torpor. When life becomes an extended picnic, with nothing of importance to do, ideas of greatness become an irritant. Such is the nature of the Europe syndrome.”

Mr. Steyn explains it this way: When the state “gives” you everything, it’s not surprising that citizens stop functioning as adults and life becomes an extended adolescence. Gerald Ford said, “A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take away everything you have.”

Now in Europe, the reality is that a government big enough to give you everything you want isn’t big enough to get you to give any of it back. That’s where Europe is. The European model welfare state is unsustainable, but government can’t get its citizens to cut back. These countries can’t fix the situation they’re in and are heading for collapse.

America can still avoid the fate of Europe and get off the track it is on. Mr. Steyn writes: “They can rediscover the animating principles of the American idea — of limited government, a self-reliant citizenry and the opportunities to exploit your talents to the fullest — or they can join most of the rest of the Western world in terminal decline. To rekindle the spark of liberty once it dies is very difficult. The inertia, the ennui, the fatalism is more pathetic than the demographic decline and fiscal profligacy of the social democratic state, because it’s subtler and less tangible.”

Gen. Stark was right when he said, “Live free or die.” We have to decide whether or not we want to live free or continue on the path we’re now on to big government and shrinking liberty and freedom. The free lunch may seem delicious, but it is the most poisonous food a free society serves up. Those free lunches are toxic to freedom.

The Eurack Obamapean

It has been described in the adoring old media as 'a sea of humanity' and 'hundreds of thousands of adoring followers'. Of course, I am talking about the crowds at rallies for United States Presidential candidate Barrack Obama's visit this past week to Europe for his speeches in front of the 'adoring throngs' - in Germany and France. Meanwhile, back home here in the good-old United States, where the election actually matters and among his own nation, Republican candidate John McCain chose to visit with and talk problems with real Americans. The Dems just don't understand the significance of the difference. A professor on public policy at George Mason University, Jeremy Mayer, is quoted as saying "...if you look at the pictures this week, McCain is speaking at a German restaurant in Ohio, and Obama is speaking before 200,000 Germans in Berlin” as if that is somehow a negative for McCain. Obama is speaking to a lot of Germans while American hero John McCain is speaking to a regular American-dream independent businessman, but somehow Obama's Euro-speech is more significant? Only to the liberal Kool Aid-drinking, Dem-supporting academic elites and the old media. With all the attention, Obama gained nothing in the polls during his big Euro-love festival. Liberal pundits are scratching their heads wondering what they have to do to get their candidate ahead. They just don't realize that there is little that you can do to fool the full 51% of the American population of Americans who support positions to the right of their far-left agenda. It is not enough that he chose Europe to make his big public push this week, Obama was also seen globe-trotting in the war-torn Middle East. Problem was that he once again found a way to alienate our troops while over there. He continued his strategy of putting forth two different positions at once, depending on whatever audience he was in front of at the time. Pull out the troops, keep a strong presence. Keep up the fight, time to end the war. Back and forth, flip and flop, two-faced to the end. Those liberal pundits will continue scratching their heads as to the tight polls right up until their election loss in November. They just don't get it, that the majority of Americans will always chose a real, proven American hero over a Euro-candidate any year.
