Raunchiest Celebrity in Washington Regurgitated

Caribou Barbie Sarah Palin embraces her inner mooseDon't understand how personal matters can derail coverage of local events, but once again the beast has reared its ugly kisser.

This beauty sat in my editing bin for over a month. Yowza! I really am behind keeping up with the times. But couldn't let the 15th Annual Funniest Celebrity in Washington roll without a nod. Thankfully, recent developments have enhanced its relevance.

Last year's fundraiser drew pointed appreciation for runners-up, Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter and the lesser-known Ana. Continuing the "aw ya got robbed" tradition of underdog love, vlogger extraordinaire James Kotecki got his share of laps for a raunchy take on Election 2008.

Winner Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas and former presidential contender, must have bribed someone for the title 'cause let's face it, Kotecki wiped the floor with Huck's routine. He even scored extra brownie points for non-partisan telling it like it is. Note these deleted lyrics from Kotecki's act:

Palin is the Governor of Alaska/There's just one question I gotta ask her/ She's got a bang'n body that we all want to hit/Does that negate the fact that she don't know sh**?
Speaking of dope raps about Palin, last Saturday's SNL Weekend Update kicked Kotecki's initiative up a notch. A sketch likely to live in the annals of SNL folklore featuring ready-to-pop Amy Poehler, Alaskan themed dancers and co-anchor Seth Myers bopping with the real Sarah Palin bore more than just a passing resemblance to its raunchier predecessor.

If only Kotecki could have foreseen the comedic boost of hilariously funny backup, he might have walked off with this year's crown. Food for thought as local competitors gear up for next year.

That's One Coyote Ugly Beehive

Third Annual Hot in Hollywood Charity Benefit debuts with an ugly beehive

Oh my Lord, will someone please explain what Wynonna Judd was thinking?!

That outfit has to be one of the ugliest couture gowns ever known to mankind. Where on earth did she find it? In the trash can at Loehmans?

I'm not just saying this to rag on the anorexically-challenged, but the Amy Winehouse motif is not very flattering. Sorry, but that look only works for skinny nothing crack whores ... people like ... uh .... Amy Winehouse. The Reject of Rehab's beehive and smoldering cigarette are so out of place on Wynonna.

On the other hand, Wy is looking way toned, don't you think. Definitely an improvement...

...if you can overlook the hideous two-toned platforms.

And realize the "gal" on stage is actually actor Jason Biggs performing a la transvestite at the Third Annual Hot in Hollywood charity benefit. The event raises money for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in Los Angeles.

Buh-bye, Miss American Pie.

Spewker Shines Spotlight on "Making The Movie"

T'was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. No fires raging near Big Sur. In the shadow of a recently ended writers strike, a subtle but festive mood uplifted the Hollywood elite. All of Tinseltown prepared for a memorable afternoon culminating in the Dorothy Chandlier Pavillion ... or was it the Kodak Theater?

Quite difficult to remember now that so much time has flown by.

Oh, what does it matter? It was the 80th Annual Academy Awards with a cast full of sparkling characters to light up the sky.

Oh, alright then, it was the Kodak Theater.

Whatever happened to the Dorothy Chandlier Pavillion? I wonder how the Chandlier family feels about being supplanted by an instant camera.

Yes, as I was saying, The Spewker was poised for one of its first live blogs. I had no idea what we were doing. In fact, I was so spanking brand new to the entire concept that I turned over the reins to our virtual Hollywood correspondent, Moan Quivers. Moani held the live blog on Twitter which explains the non-existence of her witty reparte. None of the posts survived.

For those who know absolutely nothing about Twitter, let's just say that your posts disappear after three or so pages of tweets. Someone has since developed an application to capture archives, but at the time, Twitter messages faded about as quickly as they spammed.

Too bad because Moan was on such a roll it bordered on sheer genius.

Somehow, some way, Making The Movie got wind of our ambitious effort and linked to our live blog announcement. I'm not sure how many people tuned in as a result, but I do remember Moani jumping around the room ecstatically after seeing our link in the midst of a prestigious list of live bloggers.

I'm glad to re-visit Making The Movie and see it robustly alive and kicking. So many blogs pop up and seem to disappear overnight. This is one tenaciously digging in its heels for the long run.

Good sticky content and well-written articles too. The site provides filmmaking tips, resources, reviews, news and links. A film maker's library with information written in plain English.

How many blogs can make that kind of claim?

Congratulations, Mr. Ott and Making The Movie. For your magnaminous gesture of linking to and referencing this then relatively unknown blog, you are the winners of a coveted Spewker Spotlight award. Target, save, and upload the award to your site or email me at the address on the bottom for detailed coding information.

Want to know how you can be our next featured spotlight winner? Simply mention this blog with a link to our site in any of your articles or embed in a page of your website. If we like what we see, you may be the next winner of our coveted award.

Taking John Waters to Task for Backlash Against Honfest

Once a year, the Hons take center stage here in Baltimore. Hampden, to be precise, home of the Miracle on 34th Street," is also Hon capital of the world. Hon ground zero, if you will. The annual Honfest hit the ground running this past weekend and attendant fireworks didn't disappoint.

But before we get to the persnickety controversy, let's get one thing straight. The celebration of Hons is a time honored tradition in these quirky parts, a dubious distinction Baltimoreans proudly wear on their sleeves.

This Baltimoron is no expert on Hons, having grown up in the vicinity of the now mammoth Sinai Hospital complex and world famous Pimlico Racetrack, later becoming a faceless mass in the white flight to suburbia, but I do know a thing or two about visceral affiliation with hometown identity. Los Angeles is inextricably linked with all things Hollywood, Wisconsin with cheese, San Francisco with streetcars and the Golden Gate Bridge, Detroit with Motown, Washington D.C. with the business of politics, and Baltimore with hons and crabs.

Is that a faux pas? I'm just speaking from the heart, hon.

No, seriously now, the distinctive accent, fixation with spirited birds, crab a la everything, Nipper the phonograph dog, Natty Boh, marble steps, Bromo Seltzer Tower, Preakness, and Honfest distinguish Baltimore from its more tony neighbor down I-95, although as far as the cartographers are concerned we might as well be one and the same. Ever notice how Washington, D.C. is prominently featured on every map and Atlas but Baltimore barely cuts the grade? Do you have any idea what it's like to live in a town with a combined population approaching two million (Baltimore City and Baltimore County are governed by different municipalities but are essentially the same area) and forever be lumped into the same locale as a place that couldn't be more different if its survival depended on it?

Yes, I'm talking about D.C. Twin cities we are not. Siamese twin polar opposites is more like it.

Just like the Preakness and pro sports teams named after birds, Honfest is uniquely Baltimore. The history of Hons, so I'm told, began with the hard-working woman of World War II. When the GIs returned, these enterprising young ladies continued to work. Hey, Baltimore is not a town of Ritz. I imagine back then money was just as tight as it is now. These second incomes helped support an upwardly mobile but modest lifestyle during the boomer age. You can't fault women for wanting better lives for their families.

As the story goes, women didn't work in executive positions, they took hard scrabble jobs. So on weekends, they liked to get dolled up and party. And Baltimore being the kitschy town that it was (and is), dolled up meant tight outfits, massive jewelry, appalling makeup, and hair piled high to the sky. Think New Jersey south of the Mason-Dixon. Beehive hairdos were all the rage and nobody wore them better than east side Baltimore. The higher, bigger, shinier, and stiffer, the better. Believe me when I say John Waters didn't have to think long and hard when he thought up the title to Hairspray.

More about dear John later.

Anyway, these dolled up, tight laced, beehive wearing, red lipped, smoking ladies eventually became known as Hons. It must have something to do with the way Baltimoreans talk because I remember being called Hon quite a bit on the streets in and around the racetrack. Even now when I venture to the Inner Harbor some gum cracking waitress will shout out a Hon or two. A term of endearment really, just an abbreviated "honey" with the glory of Baltimore "OH" lovingly wrapped inside.

Ever been to a sporting event with Baltimoreans and notice how they scream in unison "OH" when they get to the "Oh say can you see" part of the Star Spangled Banner? It's all connected I'm telling you, in an Oriole birds and "dem O's" quirky kind of way.

When Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood decided to reinvent itself as the suburbs of City rather than a dingy mill section of town, Mom and Pop businesses moved in like crazy. Today, a stroll down The Avenue is like walking around New York's TriBeCa, there are so many unusual shops and restaurants to see. Not to mention a liberal dose of second-hand store gold mines. Hampden is one of a kind because it's uniquely Baltimore, much like Fells Point but without the water.

Some time ago, CafeHon -- the jewel of Hampden -- began a one day neighborhood gathering to celebrate Baltimore fashion and culture, affectionately christened Honfest for those who dare to be kitsch. The annual event has since morphed into a two-day festival with an anything goes mentality, many abandoning all form of reason in their quest to become Hon chic. These people have their hair done in beehives, wear obnoxiously loud clothing and stilettos, don so much makeup they look like Kelly Osborne on Halloween, and enter Hon competitions for the chance to be crowned "Miss Baltimore Hon."

I know. I know. It sounds like an Iowa corn festival and maybe in some respects it is. Baltimore is a big city comprised of little neighborhoods. There really is a hometown feel, an indescribable slice of life you can't get anywhere else on this planet. Honfest has the potential to transform into a monumental party on the same scale as today's Mardi Gras (but definitely NOT Mardi Gras before Katrina -- that would be stretching the build up too far).

Okay. I've done my best to describe Hons and Honfest. Now we get to dear John. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan, a huge fan of John Waters, his brand of entertainment, and his take on life. If it weren't for Waters, Edith Massey would never have become "The Egg Lady," there'd be no such thing as front lawns decorated with pink flamingos, and Divine would have been just another drunken whore stripping for tips down on The Block. Waters savored these seedier spawns of Baltimore and in doing so made them mainstream. The magnitude of his success is a little shocking considering his film making origins. I mean honestly, back in the 1960s, he was the probably the first person to film a transsexual devouring dog crap. Steaming dog crap. With a hint of lemon.

As a native Baltimoron who wears her Honness as a badge of honor, I have no qualms taking Waters to task for his recent statements against Honfest. For the record, he lambasted the celebration saying the Hon image was so overused he would no longer utter the word or use the idea in any of his scripts. Not only that, he urged the City of Baltimore to stop supporting the event, claiming people who now participate do so to denigrate Hons.

Yup. The native son and one who paved the road for unbridled madness now turns his back on the monster of Honfest, professing lack of authenticity mars the luster. Reminds me of Dr. Frankenstein and monster remorse, although in that story the monster tried to kill anything in its path and wreak mayhem.

In contrast, Honfest is a harmless lovable fuzzball, a chance to bond with homegrowns giving Baltimore a distinct flavor separate and apart from that political metropolis down I-95. The fact that the idea caught fire with so many out of towners is all the more reason to revel in all things Hon, don't you think? Waters really missed the mark and that's a low down dirty rotten shame.

Seriously, hon, we're talking two days. Two days of blissful merriment and bustling business for tiny Hampden. Waz all de fuss har?

Scarlett Johansson Opens Cannes of Worms

Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem, real life boyfriend of co-star Penelope Cruz, share a red hot scene in their latest Woody Allen movie
Scarlett Johansson needs to stick a pin in it. Her head must be the size of a watermelon. Seriously, she of luscious lips blew a good thing big time. Must have thought old Woodykins, was paying the freight.

Scarjo's hotel, transportation, and makeup demands so enraged the French Branch of Warner Brothers Films, executives left her in New York rather than fly her to Cannes. Too bad because the crowd adored her latest Woody Allen film, Vicky Christina Barcelona. Co-stars Penelope Cruz and Rebecca Hall basked in a ten minute standing ovation alone. Afterwards, they and the Woodman partied like there was no tomorrow.

No one missed Johansson, according to one prominent New York socialite. Ouch. That's gotta sting.

John Galliano 2008 Fall Collection

John Galliano 2008 Fall Collection. Photo Courtesy of StrangerTonguesYes, I am more than two months late on this one. Sue me. Everywhere I go, there they are. Gaunt hollow eyes rimmed in circus colors, gangly limbs strewn about, hideous over-sized hats dwarfing clown-like faces, throwback garb reminiscent of medieval times.

I never claimed to be chic and no, I don't get the idiocy of these outfits from Christian LaCroix in the John Galliano 2008 Fall Collection. I mean, hells bells, who goes around looking like they just had an alien turd dropped on their head? Whatever this poor thing is sporting on her noggin, it looks like a big dog with serious anal issues jumped her bones and took a dump.

John Galliano 2008 Fall Collection.

Super-size-me wool monstrosities have no place in a fashion show. I half expect the models to remove these hats for the homeless and find an Amy Winehouse-like do underneath. Wow. It's gotta be hot under there. I hope the models either shaved their heads or are card carrying members of Hair Club for Women.

John Galliano 2008 Fall Collection. Photo Courtesy of StrangerTongues
And just for the record, the "knave look" went out of style with jousting and knights in shining armour. This is either the ugliest woman I have ever seen modeling a designer collection, or a small-breasted, round-stomached young man with a huge honker. Either way, I'm transfixed on the remarkable homeliness of the model, not the clothes, although this outfit is so over-the-top pitiful, I couldn't help but get loopy over the Maid Marion motif.

John Galliano 2008 Fall Collection

Big name stars like some Olsen twin, Lucy Lui, and Rihanna dropped by, which I suppose gave the show an air of credibility, but if you ask me, the whole lot of them look like refugees from the set of Circque du Soliel in King Arthur's Court.

We Baltimorons couldn't be more excited about the happy couple choosing our quirky town for their first love nest. I hear they secretly purchased one of those historical row houses in a yuppie downtown neighborhood.

Shhhh. Don't tell anyone. As soon as the cat's out of the bag, the paps will be swarming the place.

Of course, having Jenna and Henry nearby is a definite advantage. All that secret service protection couldn't help but lower the murder rate.

Fergie at the Costume Institute Gala Fug

Photo courtesy of GoFugYourself.comSomeone really needs to get a better night's sleep.

Supposedly, that's Fergie at the Costume Institute Gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Wow. Maybe a little less concerts and a little more shut eye, huh?

Go Fug Yourself has a nice spread with lots of glossies of the gala. I feel so honored to have Heather and Jessica agree that Lake Bell is indeed the poor man's version of Amanda Peet.

Kirsten is Just Fine. Not

Kirsten Dunst is still not over ex-boyfriend Jake GyllenhaalNo, no, Mary Jane. Say it aint' so.

Hot off her directorial debut at The Film Festival, blonde and beautiful Kirsten Dunst is reported to have checked into, a rehabilitation to the stars for substance addiction and other disorders. Just last week, reps for the Hollywood starlet insisted Kirsten was just fine.

In a tabloid world chock full of hardline partying antics, Paris, Lindsay, Tara, Britney, Amy, and Nicole standout as queens. 's fall from grace feels like a lob from left field. She's been a mere blip on gossip radar since her final split from . At least one snarky blogger suggests her recent erratic behavior resulted from a chance meeting in Utah.

If that's the case, we say get over it. There's plenty of fish in the sea. Learn from past mistakes, clean up your act, and start fresh. You've got plenty of time to meet Mr. Right. And unlike Delta Burke, you're still young with the whole world at your feet. The worst thing anyone can do is to keep beating themself up over things they can't change. Figure out what can be changed and go do it. Men are not the ice cream, they're just the cherry on the whipped cream.

Hugs and tugs to Mendes who should be shuffling back any minute.

Molly Shannon is Tidy Bowlicious

Molly Shannon seems to be everywhere lately. Here, the Year of the Dog star dedicates a new squeezably soft public restroom in Times Square, New York, NY. Steven Soifer and the ARA would be so proud.

Sorry, but with this week's spotlight on bathroom humor, I couldn't resist.

Wonder how long it will take until the place is totally trashed.

Escaped Mayor of Munchkinland Resembles Andy Hardy

Photo by Ferdaus Shamim - courtesy of Wire ImagesSomeone better tell Mickey Rooney that red makes him look like a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon. No? Well then how about the mayor of Munchkinland? He's certainly the right height. Hoarding old Judy Garland cast-offs again, are we Hardy boy?

Is this guy still ticking? Geez, I thought he kicked the bucket years ago. Must be the oldest living legend in Hollywood.

The costumes were all in good fun. Notables Tina O'Brien, Paul Michael Glaser, and Nigel Havers, along with a scad of lesser knowns joined Mickey and Jane yesterday for the First Family Entertainment Pantomime Season Launch party. Too bad this gala happened across the pond. Looks like jolly good fun.

Here's wishing Mickey another 120 years!

New Line Cinema 40th Anniversary Gala

Celebs who've chowed down at the trough of New Line Cinema (and some who haven't) clamoured about at the studio's 40th Anniversary Gala this past Friday in New York City. Don't know why this newcomer didn't get the "no white shoes after Labor Day" memo, but suspect it may be the weather. Here in Baltimore, we've been enduring 80+ degree days with no end in sight. As our weather goes, so usually does the Big Apple's.

Nice legs. Way to go on the slim downThe black toe polish contrast with summery peekaboos is a real hoot. Anyone care to guess whose shoes?
